"La Ofrenda, from the National Chicano Screenprint Taller, 1988–1989"

Ester Hernandez, La Ofrenda, from the National Chicano Screenprint Taller, 1988–1989, 1988, screenprint on paper, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of the Wight Art Gallery, University of California, Los Angeles, 1991.65.3, © 1988, Self-Help Graphics & Art, Inc.

In this work, a hand presents an offering, an ofrenda, to a woman whose back is tattooed with the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico. In this intimate moment Hernandez positions her then-partner's back as an altar. While Virgin of Guadalupe is often understood as a symbol of womanhood and has been used to reinforce patriarchal and heteronormative roles in society, it has recently been reclaimed by Chicana feminist artists. In this print, Hernandez creates an embodied queer space that reappropriates the iconic image of the Virgin.
