Process, Product and Black Practice
Process, product, and practice: the three Ps of art making. This exhibition is an exploration of these three Ps and their implications for Black aesthetic practices through the relationship between process- and product-oriented works by African American artists. Within that relationship lies a goal of redefining Black consciousness in art.
CIPX Dartmouth with Kali Spitzer and Will Wilson
Conceptualized by photographer Will Wilson, the collaborative project Critical Indigenous Photographic Exchange (CIPX) responds to the widely circulated ethnographic photography of Native Americans beginning at the turn of the twentieth century. During a ten-day residency at the museum, Kali Spitzer (Kaska Dena) and Will Wilson (Diné) will take tintype portraits of Dartmouth community members, then exhibit selected images.
Reconstitution
Institutional spaces have long privileged Euro-American narratives, which has had powerful, even dangerous consequences in our culture and society. Artists in Reconstitution foster the evolution of previously entrenched narratives as they remind us that we are all responsible agents in the complicated processes of writing current and future histories.
Contemporary Indigenous Australian Photography
Shifting the LensDrawing from the Hood Museum’s collection of Indigenous Australian art, Shifting the Lens features photography by Christian Thompson, Fiona Foley, Bindi Cole, Michael Cook, Darren Siwes, Tony Albert, and Michael Riley that interrogates and conveys the multidimensionality of Indigenous Australian experiences.
Portrait of the Artist as an Indian / Portrait of the Indian as an Artist
In this gallery of "portraits," contemporary Native artists offer us some very different ideas about who they are and whom their work portrays. Speaking directly to and about stereotypes embedded in the American imagination, as Natives are presented in paintings, photographs, popular art, and public performance, new Native artists reshape their identities as both Indians and artists who portray the unexpected.

Global Contemporary
Global contemporary art encapsulates the practices of Western and non-Western artists alike who emobdy the spirit of the time. This installation presents a contemporary story of the continent of Africa through fifteen powerful works in diverse media and in myriad forms by multiple generations of artists. The works explore a range of issues, including the impact of the colonial past on present challenges of nation-building in Africa, feminism, urbanism and infrastructural changes, globalization, forced and voluntary immigration, and environmental challenges.
