About the Native America Map and Search
The Native America Map and Advanced Search, object images, and related videos and resources were made possible in part by a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
Many object records were created from historic documentation and may not have been reviewed by a curator, scholar, or elder; they may be inaccurate or incomplete. The tribal names and terminology are based on those used in 2016-17 at the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution. The list of cultures is not comprehensive and reflects the artists and makers of works in the Hood Museum of Art collection.
The Hood Museum of Art is in full compliance with the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Please contact Kathleen O’Malley, Registrar, ([email protected]) with any inquiries.
The Native American “Map and Advanced Search” portal was developed by the Hood Museum of Art, in collaboration with the Web Services team at Dartmouth’s Information, Technology, and Consulting Department and OHO Interactive. Video production was provided by the Media Production Group at Dartmouth. The Native American art educator resources were written by Vivian Ladd, edited by Kristin Swan, and designed in Squarespace by Kathleen Stinson. All object photography is by Jeffrey Nintzel.
