The themes and ideas expressed in José Clemente Orozco’s great mural cycle The Epic of American Civilization are startling in their originality and representation of the struggles and violence that characterized the early twentieth century.
In this teacher workshop, Mary Coffey, Associate Professor of Art History at Dartmouth and author of the award-winning How a Revolutionary Art Became Official Culture: Murals, Museums, and the Mexican State, will lead teachers through the Orozco murals. Teachers will also tour the controversial “Hovey murals,” a set of murals created in reaction to Orozco’s work which illustrator Walter Beach Humphrey described as more “Dartmouth” in character. The existence of both Orozco’s fresco and Humphrey’s mural on campus provides a unique opportunity to explore the politics of art and images.
Finally, there will be opportunities to consider a variety of ways to integrate the Orozco murals into the curriculum and discuss the relevance of The Epic of American Civilization to issues facing America today.
The cost for this workshop is $25, and it is recommended for 5 contact hours toward recertification.
