Act 6: The Death of Kampei: In the foreground, Ichimonjiya, the proprietor of the Kyoto teahouse that purchased Okaru’s service, has arrived with a palanquin to claim his property. Knowing nothing of this arrangement, Kampei questions the validity of the contract Ichimonjiya has laid out in front of him. Okaru and her mother weep because, moments before, three hunters had arrived with the body of Okaru’s father. Kampei attempts to maintain his composure as he negotiates with Ichimonjiya, but he is troubled by the possibility that he may have murdered his father-in-law. Kampei’s problems are compounded further with the arrival of Hara and Senzaki, former retainers of Enya. They inform Kampei that his contribution to the memorial monument for Lord En’ya has been rejected. Kampei later commits suicide, a fitting end for a samurai who failed in his duty to protect his daimyo, Lord En’ya.
