Palm fronds and wiry branches weave into a tangled scrim in this dense mahogany hammock, a raised area of hardwood trees within the expansive wetlands of the Everglades in southern Florida. Gazing into this virtually impenetrable forest, photographer Mary Peck trains her lens on the fragile ecosystem, challenging our expectations of landscape photography. The wide-angle shot captures the intertwining masses of trees and vines rather than a deeply receding panorama, trading landscape’s traditional recession into space for a shallow field of hyper-abundant biodiversity.
