A life-long Philadelphian, Arthur Beecher Carles was an early and devoted American proponent of European avant-garde trends, as is evident in his dramatic brushwork and inventive use of color. Diagonal shafts of light and color stream down, giving structure to the energetic floral composition.

We often incorporate flowers into funerals and memorial services, and sometimes flowers or cherished objects remind us of someone we have lost. These ideas blended for the grieving mother who gave this work to the College in memory of her son, Richard Shapiro, Class of 1943. Shapiro was killed in action a year after his graduation from Dartmouth while fighting in World War II.
