Montoya’s image highlights the complex relationships between female sport, masculinity, and the female body. The ring ropes and low angle draw the viewers’ eyes straight to the female boxer in a mid-bout debriefing with her coach. A “ring girl” in heels walks prominently in the foreground, further framing the boxer while also drawing attention to the female photographer watching the fight. Montoya simultaneously confirms and confronts gender stereotypes through this complex composition, highlighting the subversive act of the female boxer taking on a “man’s sport” as well as the female photographer in the company of the hypersexualized “ring girl.”
