The twelve portraits in this portfolio represent Muslims across gender, race, and sexual orientation, some choosing traditional modest dress and others reveling in an urban punk aesthetic. While Islam is evidently key to how these subjects (who chose to participate in the project) identify themselves, the resulting portraits make it clear that their identity is not and should not be tied to stereotypes. Mahtab Hussain started this project, reflecting the varied lives of Muslims living in the West, in Great Britain, where he lives. He has continued it in various cities throughout the United States, including this portfolio of portraits from New York City.
