In this surreal scene, a seated woman turns toward a caped man who raises a white cane like a magic wand, as if summoning an imagined world far removed from the stark reality of the refugee camp that surrounds them. Part of Omar Imam’s Live, Love, Refugee series, this photograph reflects the artist’s collaboration with Syrian refugees in Lebanon to bring their dreams, fears, and desires to life. Through this process, refugees transform their trauma into staged narratives, challenging stereotypes of victimhood by showcasing resilience and creativity. The sparse, yet deliberate, elements in the image invite viewers to consider the emotional landscapes of exile, offering a poignant exploration of identity, imagination, and survival amid displacement.
