For this image, Darryl DeAngelo Terrell borrowed their mother’s fur coat and made up their face. Upon seeing the photograph, Terrell’s mother said that her child looked like her, motivating Terrell to choose the title. Terrell was originally inspired to make this self-portrait in response to Robert Mapplethorpe’s images of Black men, as well as a self-portrait in which Mapplethorpe wears makeup. Having made a place for their work within the history of gay photography, Terrell finds that the image they have developed for themself is tied to both their queer relationships and their biological family.
