Habichuelas con dulce, a Dominican dessert soup of pureed red beans topped with milk cookies, is a recurring subject in Carlos Almonte’s prints. Almonte was born in Santo Domingo and settled in New York later in his adult life. Here, the habichuelas are shown served in an iconic New York City “anthora” coffee cup and in a big pot, ready for sharing. These prints present a visual fusion of the artist’s Dominican roots, his newfound home in New York City, and the legacy of Greek Americans in the New York restaurant landscape (through the cup design). As increasing numbers of people migrate to and within the United States, food repeatedly affirms belonging.
