Tim Davis is engaged in the formal aspects of photography and socially engaged documentary. McDonalds II, part of his Retail series, pictures the famous golden arches of a McDonald’s sign prominently, even ominously, reflecting in this home’s window. There is no sign of life, and this precise composition shows stark contrast between the flaking window frame against the neon lights of this iconic corporate logo. As Davis writes about these works, “I photographed houses at night, each with a reflection in its window from the multinational corporation across the street. The reflections were horrific reminders of the reach of global capital even into our private lives, and at the same time were undoubtedly the most beautiful things I’ve ever rendered; like stained-glass windows in single-storey [sic] American suburbs, or the illuminated capitals of medieval manuscripts.”
