2021–22 Annual Report: Development

This year, the Hood Museum of Art celebrates the fifth year of its free Friends program. Since converting to a free group in 2017, we have enjoyed sustained increases to our membership each year as well as generous annual giving to the Friends of the Hood fund. This year, we are thrilled to say we have over 2,700 members in our Friends group—an increase of approximately 18 percent. In FY22, donations from our Friends, which support projects across all departments at the museum, reached an all-time high. In addition to the increases in membership and contributions, we have also enjoyed more opportunities to engage with our Friends in person. With the galleries reopened to the public, it was wonderful to see longtime supporters of the museum enjoying exhibitions, public programs, lectures, and performances in our spaces. We are incredibly grateful for the many forms of support our Friends bring us each year.

This year also brought increased membership and engagement in our Director's Circle, the group of Hood Museum donors who contribute $2,500 or more to the museum each year. After a break from Director's Circle travel early in the pandemic, the Director's Circle enjoyed three unique travel opportunities with the Hood Museum in FY22. In September 2021, Director's Circle members traveled to Santa Fe with Hood Museum Director John Stomberg and Curator of Indigenous Art Jami Powell for a trip inspired by contemporary Indigenous art. The next trip brought travelers to New York City in April 2022 for a single-day event highlighting exhibitions organized or supported by current Hood Board of Advisors members. Finally, in May 2022, Director's Circle members traveled to Chicago with John Stomberg and newly hired curators Michael Hartman and Alisa Swindell. This trip offered the group an opportunity to acquaint themselves with Michael and Alisa's art historical backgrounds in American art and photography, respectively.
