Based in London, William Hogarth (1697–1764) was a widely influential English painter and engraver whose work, particularly as a printmaker, offered pointed, shrewd, and satirical social and political commentary. Hogarth's prints depicted prostitutes, unfaithful spouses, the poor, venereal diseases, and death—urgent social issues in his day—in accessible, often humorous vignettes.
