Possibly commissioned by the sitter, Brigadier General George Foster Shepley (1819-1878) and his second wife Helen Merrill Shepley (1839-1915) of Portland, Maine, on their wedding trip in 1872; bequeathed to his daughter Annie Hathaway Shepley Tiffany (1850-1922), perhaps at the time of her step-mother's death in 1915; bequeathed to present collection, 1922.
