Label
Printmakers would often create designs knowing their potential for adaptation into sculpture. Heinrich Aldegrever first trained as a goldsmith, like many other contemporary printmakers. His small prints could be modified to adorn objects such as dagger hilts, fine tableware, elaborate containers, and many other uses. The putto, double-tailed siren, and acanthus leaves are all common decorative elements, which could ensure that the final piece of metalwork would fit into a larger design program.
