Framed by curtains of Russian bagels (sushki or baranki), coworkers take a break to eat together. Everything in this image is pristine, shiny, and perfectly arranged, with a plentiful feast of breads, confections, and tea filling the white tablecloth, and fine china teacups sprinkled throughout. Yet, the people’s expressions are passive. In a moment staged to display their togetherness, these coworkers seem noticeably disengaged. One wonders who this image was curated for, and what it was meant to say. What does workplace mealtime look like now, in an era of screens and videoconferencing?
