As both a queer artist and an American of Cuban descent, George Tooker grew up experiencing multiple forms of discrimination. Through his work, Tooker explores themes of exclusion while frequently imbuing his paintings and print with political commentary. Half Dozen Eggs was created for a civil rights auction held in Hanover in 1963, with proceeds donated to the NAACP. This simple composition of brown and white eggs is actually a powerful vision of future racial integration. By portraying both brown and white eggs in the same container, Tooker seems to suggest that equality should be considered as commonplace as eggs in a carton. This softly rendered painting demonstrates that even as a simple object study can have symbolic, and even historic, undertones.
