Sonia Landy Sheridan’s Synchronicity and Sonia in Time explore the relationship between the artist and emerging digital technology. As an artist-in-residence at 3M, Sheridan worked with early imaging and computer graphic systems to create these groundbreaking works. In Synchronicity, two triangles, each containing Sheridan’s own image, seem to emerge from the screen, pulling her into digital space and suggesting a fusion between the artist and the technology. The repetition of her image reflects a looping, recursive connection between her and the machine. In Sonia in Time, Sheridan’s image is fragmented across multiple computer screens, each displaying a version of herself, creating a sense of multiplicity and dislocation. Both works address the ways in which technology mediates self-representation, raising questions about identity, the artist’s role in creating art through machines, and the implications of existing and creating in a digital world.
