By drawing upon his remaining memories as a Vietnam War refugee, Dinh Q. Lê uses photographs from US news sources and stills from Hollywood films to reconstruct narratives of the Vietnam War. Look carefully to find images in Untitled of a strapped soldier in a crucifix-like position, a woman wearing a cowboy hat woven against the upside-down face of another woman, and a line of military men with parachutes.

During the artist’s childhood in Vietnam, his aunt taught him how to weave grass mats. This experience later influenced his current photo-weaving technique. Here, Lê reflects on his own memories of the Vietnam War, adapting traditional techniques to weave together popular film stills romanticizing violence. In Untitled, Lê grapples with the representation and resonance of the Vietnam War.
