Label
In this diptych, Pepe Coronado places small, silhouetted maps of the Dominican Republic within the map of the United States, then reverses the scheme and places silhouettes of the United States within a map of the Dominican Republic. The borders of the United States are broken by the insertion of the patterned maps of the Dominican Republic, creating a visual representation of the intertwined and entangled histories between the two countries. By adjusting the scale of the maps, the artist challenges their existing power relations as well.
From 1916 to 1924, the United States led an intervention in the Dominican Republic; in 1965, it invaded the country and orchestrated a coup d’etat, thereby removing the democratically elected leftist government of Juan Bosch. Since 1965, over one million Dominicans have immigrated to the United States.
