Like NDGT/#25, this photograph uses classical allusions to explore spectacle through performance in the public sphere. It captures the Yale men’s soccer team arranged to imitate a free-form dome—an architectural structure used to cover large spaces without the need for the columns often used to support sports arenas. The players spout arcs of blue Gatorade into one another’s mouths and are organized akin to a European fountain decorated with sculptures of young nude male figures. This performative act evokes a sense of homoerotism that pointedly departs from the socially conditioned heterosexual masculine stereotypes typically associated with men’s sports teams.
