Produced in 1986, the year before the artist’s death, Andy Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians portfolio is a complex exploration of the tensions between colonization and expansion, Native American culture and its romanticization, and the ways in which these deeply entangled historical narratives become part of American visual culture. By removing the landscape or background, Warhol calls attention to how American histories and experiences have been flattened and mobilized within popular culture. Here, he invites us to reconsider our perceptions of these iconic figures, the narratives surrounding them, and the impact of these images upon our understandings of those depicted.
