The title of the series—Space Squared—acts as a play on words, suggesting Francesca Woodman’s interest in both in the physical environment and that which is reproduced by the photograph itself. The artist crouches within a display case in a shadowed room, balancing on the wooden slats and pressing her nude body against the glass. This liminal scene is captured in a small, constricting photograph, and the entire print is enclosed in a paradoxically large frame. Though seemingly trapped inside the case, Woodman reaches one hand around the other side, as if taking control of her own narrative. While she is nude, she does not seem vulnerable, refusing to be perceived as just an object on display.
