In I Am, Lemieux takes a vernacular photo—an image captured for personal use—and embellishes it, adding “I AM” above the young girl’s outstretched arms. The identities of the photograph’s subjects and their connections to one another remain a mystery to the viewer, but the joy on their faces is evident. Their body language also portrays an ease that tells us something about the closeness of their relationship and the impact they have had on one another.
