In this image, Gisèle Freund (born Gisela) shows us an intimate moment in the life of James Joyce, who is playing the piano while his son looks on with admiration and focus. The setting is a cozy domestic interior. The family photos on top of the piano reinforce the feeling of being at home. Freund specialized in picturing 20th-century cultural icons. She was a career portraitist, becoming the president of the French Association of Photographers late 1970s. Though born in Germany, Freund spent her life in France, even earning the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in the 1980s.
