Like many Native and other American artists, George Longfish builds on the legacy of Pop Art and its use of advertisement and graphic-design elements to convey the complexity of contemporary Haudenosaunee and broader Indigenous experience. In the central panel of this triptych is a jar of Seneca-brand applesauce, a company founded in New York State in 1949. The use of this apple sauce jar calls attention to the ways that tribal nations and imagery have been used to sell “American” products. It also cleverly alludes to the pejorative term “apple,” used by some Native people to describe a fellow Native person who is “Red” on the outside and “White” on the inside.

From the 2026 exhibition American Pop, curated by Jami Powell (Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs & Curator of Indigenous Art), Evonne Fuselier (Hood Museum Board of Advisors Mutual Learning Fellow, Curatorial), and Beatriz Yanes Martinez (former Hood Museum Board of Advisors Mutual Learning Fellow, Curatorial, 2021-2024)
