With his eyes closed, a nude man relaxes on the beach with his hands behind his head. Being fully exposed in such a way is a vulnerable position, yet he seems comfortable, especially given the presence of a friend whose feet peek out from the bottom of the frame. This depiction is not trying to be sexy; in fact, it is not trying to be anything. He and his friend on the beach just are, and the work’s simple composition reflect this.
Heyman’s Tattoo Series is comprised of several Japanese woodblock prints of men at a nude beach on Cape Cod. The second pair of feet featured at the bottom of the frame are Heyman’s own, the art born from the intimate environment that he created with his friend.
