Henry Bates Williams (1907-1987), Dartmouth Professor of English and Drama; given to present collection, 1947. Collected by Major Jay Eugene Tremaine (1902-1944), Class of 1924 from friendly headhunter chiefs on Mindanao Island, Philippines, somewhat before the Japanese invasion of Corregidor [Buried by friend in corner of warehouse, and recovered after the war. Shipped home by the U.S. Government. Major Jay Eugene Tremaine drowned while trying to rescue fellow prisoners on prison ship, Shinyo Maru, sunk off Mindanao, Sept. 7 1944, by the USS Paddle (a horrible mistake, killing 682 allied prisoners]; to his mother, Clara Josephine Tremaine (1872-1962), Palos Verdes Estates, California; given to present collection, 1947.
