The Sestercentennial of the United States of America provides an apt moment to bring up this wonderful quote. The story of this country endlessly feeds back on itself, echoing its past even as it sets out along new paths. While we are not sure exactly who brought this saying into popular parlance, Mark Twain is one likely source, and it would be fitting for the 250th if it were him. Twain was a master novelist who captured great sweeps of US history.
