About

Who Cares? invites us to think about what "care" means and who is caring for whom and in what contexts. Using works of art as prompts, what patterns do we see across time and space in the identities of those who care? Who Cares? aims to make the invisible visible, to honor the essential act of cleaning and caring, and to recognize the value of this work.

Who Cares? is curated in conjunction with the class Maid in America: The Politics of Domestic Labor, taught in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and cross-listed with Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies. It is inspired and informed by Evelyn Nakano Glenn's essay "Creating a Caring Society" in Contemporary Sociology 29, no. 1 (Jan. 2000), special issue titled "Utopian Visions: Engaged Sociologies for the 21st Century," pp. 84–94. The exhibition is organized by the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth, and generously supported by the Harrington Gallery Fund.
