Expansion

Behind the Scenes at the New Hood Museum of Art

Museum director John Stomberg gives Dartmouth News a tour of the building in progress.

What's in a Brick?

Careful selection of materials is crucial to getting the museum’s new façade exactly right. Architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien have gone to great lengths to find the perfect combination of bricks and mortar that will speak to the Hood’s immediate neighbors, traditional red-brick Wilson Hall and brick-and-glass modernist Hopkins Center. Williams and Tsien’s vision for a white brick façade will also echo the iconic edifices of nearby Dartmouth Row, sparking a new conversation among the structures along the Green.

Expansion Update: "Making Progress"

EXPANSION UPDATE: Topping-Out Ceremony

On Friday, April 28, 2017, Dartmouth hosted a topping-out ceremony in recognition of the construction progress to date regarding the expansion and renovation of the Hood Museum of Art. Many of those involved in the project signed the ceremonial beam. Speakers included Interim Vice President for Campus Services Steve Moore, Joe Imelio, project executive for Daniel O'Connell's Sons, Cliff Hosley, the site superintendent, and Hood Director John Stomberg and Deputy Director Juliette Bianco. At 12:45 p.m., the beam was hoisted into place as the barbecue lunch came to an end.

Hood Museum to Open Satellite Gallery Downtown

by Hannah Silverstein, MALS '09

If you’re missing the Hood Museum of Art while it’s closed for renovation, good news: The museum has just signed a lease on a gallery space in downtown Hanover.

The gallery—to be called Hood Downtown—will be located in the former Amidon Jewelers store on Main Street, next to Molly’s Restaurant, and will open to the public starting in mid-September, says John Stomberg, the Virginia Rice Kelsey 1961s Director of the Hood.
