The title of Robert Rauchenberg’s screenprint CORE is an acronym for the Congress of Racial Equality, which was actively fighting for desegregation legislation in the 1960s. Rauschenberg employs a wide array of images, including depictions of John F. Kennedy, the Statue of Liberty, a Native American, and a Civil War soldier—all clustered together to represent a collective American experience. In this visual response to CORE and the historical struggle for equality in the United States, Rauschenberg juxtaposes moments of national glory against past lows and ongoing struggles. The layering of transparent images and abstracted yet shapes conveys tension within the work. Rauschenberg evokes the feeling of both success and defeat, clarity and a general lack of cohesive certainty. These juxtaposed sentiments ultimately characterized the national mindset of the 1960s.
