Two men share a table in this café scene, though the second man’s face remains obscured, marked only by a black top hat. Their attention is directed to the right, while two drinks on the table confirm their shared presence. The man in the background is a waiter. The merging of forms in this black lithograph adds to its ambiguity. This composition captures the shifting nature of social spaces in late 19th-century Paris with the rise of café culture, embodying the strange, surface-level connections that increasingly defined the urban experience through the 20th century and into the 21st.
