I am not an all-over painter. The rigid logic of two-dimensional esthetics binds us to the canvas surface making it an end in itself, not a means to an end. --Al Held

At the time that Held created #9, he had adopted a personal style of softly painted geometric shapes. His overlapping forms suggest spatial relationships, but the color arrangements make the sense of depth difficult to read. The lines seem to dash off in different directions, giving the composition a slightly frenzied, active feel, which is reinforced by Held’s use of many different bold colors.
