Here, Freed captures a joyful, candid moment of intergenerational celebration in this Italian family’s home. The two younger children sit at the table in their undershirts and best church shoes, relaxing after a day out. As the mother brings drinks to the celebrating family, the grandfather, the patriarch of the family, presides at the head of the table. Settings like family meals can reaffirm traditional gender roles and sustain them for successive generations.
