In 2008, the Horno Fire erupted in Camp Pendleton, a US Marine Corps base and training ground north of San Diego, California. Looming behind a ridge of mountains, the flames and smoke cast the sky with a vivid orange glow. The blurred head- and taillights of passing cars in the foreground suggest the increasing ubiquity of such events. Though wildfires are common in California’s hot and dry weather, climate change and development have exacerbated their destruction in recent years.
