Joke's on us: Longtime Dartmouth, Hood Museum staff member retires

Dan Nassau began his professional career at Dartmouth in 1999 with the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. In 2006, he transitioned to the Department of Pediatrics at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC). And in 2018, Dan embarked on a new adventure as a visitor services guide (VSG) at the Hood Museum of Art. At the museum, he found the perfect outlet for his vast knowledge and passion for sharing fun facts, as well as his infamous jokes. Dan's infectious enthusiasm and welcoming demeanor have made him a favorite among museum visitors. He has a unique talent for making everyone feel informed and appreciated, often going above and beyond to ensure that every visitor has a memorable experience.

After nearly twenty-six years at Dartmouth, Dan has announced that he is setting off on another great adventure: retirement.

"Dan will be greatly missed! I'm excited for this next chapter for him, especially since he's been looking forward to retirement. Dan has always been so welcoming, giving tours around town to new VSGs, pointing out the best places to eat and park," says fellow VSG Grace Ross, who has worked with Dan for over four years. "As the oldest member of our team, Dan has been a steady figure to many of us younger staff—a grounding presence full of wit, wisdom, and heart. He's offered advice, shared stories, and reminded us all of the importance of balance, humor, and living life fully. Beyond his funny and kind nature, Dan's inquisitive mind and Bronx energy have left a lasting impression on all of us at the museum. He loves to travel, and we can't wait to see where he goes!"

Tala Short, head of visitor services at the museum, adds, "Dan has been far more than a colleague—he's been a trusted confidant, a mentor to some, and a source of joy to many. His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering ability to make people laugh have uplifted everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him. Dan's thoughtful approach to visitor service and his genuine care have left a lasting impression on countless guests, while his kindness toward fellow staff members has fostered deep bonds and unforgettable memories. His legacy isn't defined solely by what he's accomplished during his time here but by how he's made people feel: valued, seen, and supported. His influence will continue to ripple outward long after his retirement."

Dan departs the museum with the same spirit of curiosity and adventure that has defined his whole career. Retirement for Dan isn't a farewell, it's a launchpad. With his trademark jokes and warm energy, he's already charting his next journey, eager to explore new places, meet new people, and collect even more stories to share. We wish him joy, discovery, and plenty of laughter on the road ahead.
