  • What is the admission fee for Hood events?

    Most Hood programming during the expansion project remains free and open to the public.

  • Where is the museum located?

    The Hood Museum of Art is located at 6 East Wheelock Street in Hanover, NH 03755. View a map of our location.

    While the galleries are closed for expansion and renovation, visit our Information Hub (opening late March 2016) located in the former museum shop space adjacent to the Hop. While you're there, pick up a walking tour guide to public art on campus, or see the Orozco mural in Dartmouth's Baker Library.

  • How can I learn more about events at the Hood?

    Check our Calendar of Events, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and sign up for Hood Happenings, our monthly online newsletter. Become a member to receive the museum’s quarterly magazine.

  • Does the Hood offer guided tours while the galleries are closed?

    We currently offer guided tours of public art on campus, including the Orozco fresco located in Baker-Berry Library. Tours are available to Dartmouth faculty and students, K–12 school and college groups, and community members. All tours are free.

  • Does the museum offer programs for families?

    We host a variety of exciting tours, programs, and workshops for children, teens, and families.   • Is the museum wheelchair and stroller accessible?


    Hood-related spaces, including the Hood Museum of Art Auditorium, are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Oversized and jogging strollers are prohibited. A public elevator is located near the Visitor Services desk inside the front entrance to the museum, which will continue to be open for special events during the closure to allow access to the elevator. Visit our section on accessibility for more information.

  • Are bags, backpacks, and infant carriers permitted in the museum?

    All packages, umbrellas, and backpacks must be left in the checkroom at the entrance to the museum. Infant carriers worn in front are permitted; back carriers are prohibited.

  • Why does the museum ask visitors not to touch the art?


    Your touch may not seem like much, but even the slightest contact can damage the surface of a painting, discolor stone, and even rust metal. We appreciate your help keeping the art safe so that it may be enjoyed by many generations to come!

  • Are mobile devices permitted in the galleries?

    Feel free to text, tweet, or listen to audio resources on headphones as you tour the galleries. Free public Wi-Fi is available on the Dartmouth College campus. Mobile phones may be used for photography in the permanent collection galleries with available light only.

    As a courtesy to other visitors, we ask that you please set your phone to vibrate and take all voice calls outside of the galleries.

  • May I take notes in the galleries?

    When taking notes, drawing, or using Family Guides, please use only a #2 pencil.

    Pens, highlighters, and other writing materials may not be used in the museum.

    Pencils are available at the Visitor Services Desk.

  • Is sketching permitted in the galleries?

    We welcome you to sketch from works on view in the galleries. We ask that visitors use only a #2 pencil.

  • May I take photographs in the museum?

    We welcome visitors to photograph or videotape works of art owned by the Hood Museum of Art (Trustees of Dartmouth College) for personal use only. No flash, please!

    Photographs cannot be commercially published, sold, reproduced, transferred, or distributed. Signs or objects labels marked with the "no-camera" symbol indicate that no photography is permitted for that object or exhibition. If in doubt, ask a member of our visitor services team.

    Handheld cameras or mobile phones may be used in the permanent collection galleries with available light only. Flash photography, tripods, and other photographic equipment are not permitted in the galleries. The Hood Museum of Art reserves the right to further restrict photography in the galleries as necessary.

  • How may I obtain photographs of works in the museum’s collection?

    We have guidelines for obtaining photographs of works of art in the museum’s collection for publication or other commercial uses.

    For study purposes, search the collection to view available images online. K–12 teachers will find select images made available within lesson plans in our Online Resources.

    All image and photography shoot requests by the media should be directed to the Head of Publishing and Communications.

  • How do I donate to the museum?

    Admission and programming at the museum are FREE because of the leadership of our members, who believe, as we do, that art is for everyone. We always welcome contributions to our donation box as you enter the museum. To support the Hood through membership, please visit our Membership page and join today!

  • How can I stay connected to the Hood when the building is closed for the forthcoming renovation and expansion?

    The Hood Museum of Art is preparing for a major renovation and expansion. 

    While the building is closed, our staff will continue to grow the collection, plan future exhibitions and events, and work with school groups in the Upper Valley. We will hold off-site events for our members and publish regular updates on the expansion, both online and in our quarterly newsletter.

    Become a member today to start receiving the Hood Quarterly, or sign up for Hood Happenings, our monthly email newsletter. Membership is also a good way to support the expansion.

  • Can the museum appraise a work of art in my personal collection?

    The Hood Museum and its staff cannot authenticate or conduct appraisals for objects held in private collections. We encourage you to consult a reputable appraiser, dealer, or auction house for advice.

    You can find searchable databases of appraisers through the following websites maintained by professional associations. This list is not exhaustive and does not indicate an endorsement by the Hood Museum of Art.

  • When is the museum open?

    The galleries are now closed for expansion and renovation, but our programming continues.

    Visit public art on campus, watch for upcoming exhibitions, schedule school tours, and look for campus and community events on our calendar.

  • Are materials available for self-guided tours of public art on campus?

    Audio tours are available for the Orozco mural in Baker Library. Visitors may check out the Orozco audio tours at the Reserve Reading Desk in the Orozco Room. Copies of a free brochure and visitor's guide are also available in the Orozco Room.
