The Hood: ‘Fully Engaged’ Throughout Construction

by Hannah Silverstein, MALS '09

Asked what he thinks about joining the Hood Museum of Art just before a $50 million expansion and renovation project begins, incoming Virginia Rice Kelsey 1961s Director John Stomberg laughs. “You mean, what’s wrong with me?”

The new director, who starts work on Jan. 4, is full of ideas about how the Hood can remain a vital part of campus life during the construction period. Implementing these ideas will begin, he says, while the museum is still open this winter.

Hood Museum of Art Prepares to Expand

by Hannah Silverstein, MALS ’09

Work is set to begin this spring on a $50 million expansion and renovation of the Hood Museum of Art.

Plans call for the creation of a prominent gray- and white-brick façade facing the Green that will proclaim the Hood’s presence on campus; a new Center for Object-Based Inquiry that will triple the museum’s capacity to fulfill its teaching mission; 40 percent more gallery space; and a flexible concourse that will be a new venue for gatherings and performances.

Michael Taylor (MT): Tod and Billie, what attracted you to this commission?

Tod Williams (TW): You! (laughs) We heard wonderful things about you from Philadelphia and that something new was going to happen up at Dartmouth. We both went to Ivy League schools and are incredibly interested in art, so we had been to the Hood and seen its treasures and its amazing location.
