Label

In a valley surrounded by dense trees, a group of mercenaries have ambushed a traveler’s coach. Firing with their guns, the soldiers attack from all directions, advancing toward the carriage’s passengers. The travelers, however, resist the offensive, meeting the soldiers’ firearms with swords and spears. In the center, one man’s raised weapon is highlighted against the trees of the background. Other voyagers attempt to flee the onslaught, such as the man riding away at far left. Yet, the riders’ opposition seems hopeless: in the foreground sprawls a dead man’s body, his belongings strewn at his side. This violent image suggests the vulnerability of civilians and the futility of defiance in the face of greed.
