Act 3: The Quarrel of En’ya and Moronao: The melee in the background depicts the shogun’s troops running to the scene of En’ya’s assault of Moronao. In the foreground, Bannai, the chief retainer of Moronao, confronts Kampei, Lord En’ya’s youngest retainer. Kabuki audiences loved this verbal altercation because of the escalating round of insults the two men traded. Kampei was assigned the task of seeing to his master’s needs as he attended to his duties in the capital. At the moment when En’ya drew his sword and attacked Moronao, Kampei was with Okaru, one of Lady Kaoyo’s maids, to whom he was betrothed. Kampei and his ill-fated love with Okaru provides a subplot that illustrates the consequences of a samurai’s neglect of his duty.
