A woman pauses while climbing into bed. Her face turns away from us, towards the window; despite the vulnerability brought about by her naked body, we are removed from her internal experience of this moment. The curtain billows from a breeze coming into the room. The deep darkness of the wall behind accentuates the stark whiteness of the window.

Hopper often used early-twentieth century American architecture to capture scenes of isolation. Here, the open window lets in wind and light, breaching the divide between interior and exterior. And yet, it does not show a view of what exists in the outside world.
