Although modest in size, this landscape effectively captures the grandeur and variety of an American Western scene—one possibly inspired by California’s Yosemite Valley, where Thomas Hill is said to have painted over five thousand views during his career. Within this work’s compressed space, we see towering peaks, a waterfall and river below, and, providing a sense of scale, a small figure in the right foreground and a bird soaring toward the viewer. A soft haze suffuses the scene, unifying its discrete elements.

Thomas Hill is best known for his large, panoramic landscapes of the White Mountains and the American West. This work’s small size would have made it more affordable—and portable—for tourists seeking painted souvenirs.
