Provenance

Painted during Reverend Nathaniel Whitaker's (1730/32-1795) trip to England with Reverend Samson Occom to solicit funds for Reverend Eleazar Wheelock's Moor's Indian Charity School, Lebanon, Connecticut in 1767; possibly commissioned by William Legge, 2nd Earl of Dartmouth (1731-1801); by descent in the Whitaker family; given to the present collection by the sitters grandson, Honorable John Smith Whitaker (1817-1895), New Orleans, Louisiana, 1866.
