The Hood Museum of Art acquired, lent, and conserved hundreds of objects in its collection this year, both in preparation for the opening of the expanded and renovated museum and as part of the staff's ongoing commitment to collecting and stewarding works of art. In the area of acquisitions, this year was notable for an extraordinary gift from an anonymous donor of over four hundred works of contemporary art. This gift is transformative for the collection and added a significant number of contemporary Asian works, as well as some important video art. Artists of note represented in this gift include John Baldessari, Matthew Barney, Georg Baselitz, Delia Brown, Cao Fei, Chan Cao, Vija Celmins, Yi Chen, Sandro Chia, Gregory Crewdson, John Currin, Rineke Dijsktra, Nancy Drew, Marlene Dumas, Inka Essenhigh, Kota Ezawa, Katharina Fritsch, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Mona Hatoum, Candida Hofer, Yeondoo Jung, Brad Kahlhamer, Terence Koh, Yasumasa Morimura, Vik Muniz, Shirin Neshat, Sterling Ruby, Thomas Ruff, Allen Ruppersberg, Cindy Sherman, Taryn Simon, Kiki Smith, Do Ho Suh, Eve Sussman, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Wolfgang Tillmans, William Villalongo, and Yun-Fei Ji, among many others. Some of the works went up almost immediately after they arrived at the museum, and their impact upon our presentation of contemporary art has been substantial, particularly in the area of new media / video art.
