OPENING EVENT AND RECEPTION
“Early American Furniture: Understanding Designs and Appreciating Surfaces”

A Conversation with John T. Kirk, American Furniture Scholar
Moderator: Karen Keane, Chief Executive Officer, Skinner, Inc., Boston, and frequent specialist on Antiques Roadshow John T. Kirk, professor and curator, was the first person to advise collectors of early American furniture to “buy it ‘ratty’ and leave it alone.” His writings on this subject caused a major shift in perceptions and approaches to understanding, caring for, and collecting these objects, and his TV series about American antiques for WGBH, Boston, was a precursor to Antiques Roadshow. This conversation with Karen Keane, his former graduate student, will detail how to look at and care for early furniture. A reception will follow in the Kim Gallery.
