The Ancient World

There are numerous books and other resources for teachers to introduce them to the ancient world. This annotated list provides links to three museum websites. Each of these sites offers extensive resources including images, lesson plans, timelines, glossaries, videos, and more about the ancient world. Exploration of these sites will yield a wealth of curricular resources.

    The Heilburnn Timeline of Art History is a wonderful online resource. On this page you can find maps of the world at different times in history, images of a wide range of ancient objects, and a series of short, thematic essays written by scholars.

    The British Museum http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/explore_introduction.aspx

    The British Museum houses one of the finest collections of ancient art in the world, including Assyrian reliefs from the same palace of Ashurnasirpal II as the Hood Museum of Art’s reliefs. Here, on the “Explore” page, you can find links to online tours, timelines, lesson plans, images and more. You can search for resources by culture or by theme.

    This link will bring you to “Cleopatra: A Multimedia Guide to the Ancient World,” created by the Art Institute of Chicago. On this site you will find lesson plans, timelines, maps, and numerous video clips which provide a wide range of information about ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
