Rembrandt

Master of Light and Shadow; Etchings from the Collection of the Hood Museum of Art

Rembrandt’s mastery of the printmaking medium and his sensitive depiction of the human condition are unsurpassed. His numerous etchings covered the full range of styles and subjects for which he is celebrated as a painter and draughtsman, including self-portraits, scenes from the Bible, vignettes of everyday life, and character studies. Famously experimental, Rembrandt often reworked his copper plates to improve and extend their expressive power. The results can look startlingly modern and continue to inspire artists today. Drawing on many pictorial traditions and familiar themes, the works in the Hood’s collection represent Rembrandt’s achievements as a printmaker from his first etchings in the 1620s to his death forty years later. This exhibition is presented in celebration of the artist’s four hundredth birthday and will be accompanied by an illustrated brochure.

This exhibition illuminates the broader social history of the Hood by exploring the diverse "authors" of its collection history and will look at how the museum's collection has been developed and (re)defined over time. Uniting traditional with contemporary and Western with non-Western art via pottery, sculpture, utilitarian objects, textiles, photographs, and prints, col·lec·ta·ne·a explores different collecting practices and ideologies that reflect the museum's unique identity as a hunter and gatherer of material culture. This exhibition presents new work by seven important contemporary artists with an intimate knowledge both of a so-called "East" (the Middle East and North Africa) from whence they come and a "West" (Europe and America) where they primarily live and work. Beyond simply disrupting Western stereotypes and discourses, they address themselves to the issues raised by competing cultural allegiances. The exhibition features the work of Jananne Al-Ani, Ghada Amer, Mona Hatoum, Y. Z. Kami, Walid Raad, Michal Rovner, and Shahzia Sikander. A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

The Hood Museum of Art's collections at Dartmouth College, like many other museum collections, are varied and idiosyncratic, and many of its greatest riches stem from the imagination and collecting impulses of individual curators and donors. Celebrating Twenty Years showcases exceptional works of art that have been generously offered by Dartmouth alumni and friends as recent outright and promised gifts to the museum in honor of twenty years of the Hood Museum of Art in the postmodern building designed by Charles Moore and Centerbrook Architects. These important gifts will greatly enhance the museum collections and highlight the tremendous generosity of Dartmouth friends and alumni. In addition, they will expand the museum's ability to provide Dartmouth students and faculty and all visitors to the museum with direct and meaningful encounters with original works of art.
